Annual Youth Bocce Canada Tournament
The Amesbury Sports Complex was buzzing with activity as a group of skilled athletes came together to compete in the Annual Youth Bocce Canada Tournament on March 21st. The tournament was organized by Youth Bocce Canada, an associate partner of Special Olympics Ontario. Youth Bocce Canada has supported more than 350 athletes living with disabilities in the Greater Toronto Area and York Region. The organization’s ultimate goal is to build a sense of community between their athletes while encouraging participation and social skills. This tournament is in fact the largest bocce tournament held in the country. While bocce can be quite the competitive sport, this was a much different atmosphere seeing as all of the athletes were in good spirits as they readied for their competition. There was a ton of support in the arena, as the players brought family and close friends to help cheer them on. Coaches and volunteer staff were also on hand to provide players with the right advice, strategies and motivation to play their best in hopes of winning the tournament. It was wonderful to see firsthand how a simple game of bocce, a game that many local families enjoy as a way to keep active and enjoy good company, could also be used to build a person’s confidence and teamwork skills all at the same time.
